Now You Can Play Capcom’s Iconic Mega Man 2 on Your, Er, Wrist

Capcom has released Mega Man: My Play Watch, bringing the classic NES platformer Mega Man 2 to wearable technology. The digital watch features a redesigned version of the beloved 1989 game, adapted specifically for touchscreen interaction on a small display.

The watch version streamlines the original gameplay for quick, on-the-go sessions. Rather than traditional button controls, players use the touchscreen to interact with the game. Mega Man automatically runs through each stage, with players responsible for timing jumps and navigating hazards. Gameplay mechanics have been simplified: rapid taps on the screen fire weapons, while tap-and-hold gestures control jump height. This creates a streamlined experience designed for quick sessions that captures the feel of the original game in a wearable format.

Beyond gaming, Mega Man: My Play Watch incorporates modern smartwatch features typical of contemporary wearable devices. The watch includes a step tracker to monitor daily activity and a calorie monitor to track energy expenditure, both themed around the Mega Man franchise. These health and fitness tracking features align with the primary functionality expected from smartwatch devices while maintaining the classic gaming experience.

The adaptation represents an interesting approach to preserving and revisiting classic games on new platforms. Rather than a direct port, Capcom has redesigned the gameplay mechanics to suit the unique constraints and interface of a smartwatch, demonstrating how older games can be adapted for modern hardware.
