Nvidia announces higher RAM allocation for RTX 5070 laptop graphics cards
Nvidia has announced a new variant of its RTX 5070 laptop graphics card with increased VRAM, upgrading from 8GB to 12GB. This brings the mobile GPU in line with its desktop counterpart, addressing a notable limitation of the previous mobile iteration.
The RTX 5070 has been widely recommended as an affordable gaming laptop GPU capable of delivering solid performance while supporting Nvidia’s 50-series features, including multi-frame generation technology. However, its 8GB frame buffer was considered restrictive compared to the 12GB offered on the desktop version, potentially limiting performance in demanding modern games.
The move to 12GB is noteworthy given current market conditions. Typically, companies avoid announcing models with increased VRAM due to ongoing pricing pressures in the flash memory market, which has been driven by surging demand from the AI sector. These price increases affect VRAM, standard RAM, SSDs, and memory cards across the industry. By increasing the buffer despite these market headwinds, Nvidia is prioritizing performance gains for mobile gamers over cost considerations.
