Scopely and Niantic on getting that seismic $3.5bn megadeal over the line
Scopely has successfully completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic, with executives from both companies discussing the deal’s progress at the iicon conference. The discussion was hosted by Goldman Sachs’ Hemal Thaker and featured Scopely Chief Revenue Officer Tim O’Brien and Niantic President Ed Wu, who outlined the path to completing the transaction.
During the panel, the executives discussed the challenges encountered during the deal process, including technical integration difficulties and the complexities of merging the two companies. O’Brien noted that while Scopely regularly engages in M&A activity, this acquisition has proceeded “exceptionally well.” He highlighted that Niantic has experienced strong post-merger performance with double-digit year-over-year growth since the deal’s completion.
The discussion covered how the acquisition came about, the specific obstacles encountered during negotiations and integration, and the results achieved since the two companies joined forces. The successful completion of this deal represents a major consolidation in the gaming industry and demonstrates the viability of large-scale acquisitions in the sector.
