Sonic Producer Says Streets of Rage Film Was Always His Goal

Dmitri Johnson, the producer behind the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, has confirmed that his primary motivation for becoming involved with video game adaptations stems from his ambition to bring Streets of Rage to the big screen. Johnson revealed that the Streets of Rage project was always his ultimate goal, making the Sonic franchise work a strategic step toward realizing this vision.

While production on the fourth Sonic the Hedgehog film is well underway—featuring Amy Rose as a central character—the Streets of Rage adaptation remains in early development. According to a Sega financial filing, the Streets of Rage film will be produced as an animated feature, aligning with the stylistic approach of the Sonic movies. Johnson expressed enthusiasm about leveraging his expertise on the project.

Johnson made these comments during the inaugural iicon event, a gathering for video game industry executives, where he spoke with Stephen Totilo of Game File. The remarks underscore the filmmaker’s commitment to adapting beloved Sega intellectual property for the screen, and his strategic approach to positioning himself within the thriving video game adaptation space. With multiple projects in development, Johnson’s portfolio reflects the current industry trend of adapting popular gaming franchises into film and television content.
