GTA 6 Owner Passed On A Sequel To A Legacy Franchise, And We’re Dying To Know Which One

Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick has revealed insights into the company’s selective approach to game development. In an anecdote shared at the iicon conference this week, Zelnick explained that Take-Two passed on greenlighting a sequel to one of its legacy franchises because the developer pitching the project lacked genuine enthusiasm for the game. During a greenlight meeting, Zelnick sensed an uncomfortable “vibe” in the room and decided to pause the project, asking the producer directly about their excitement level. While Zelnick did not reveal which franchise was involved, he used the story to illustrate why Take-Two is deliberate about which games it pursues, prioritizing projects with genuine passion behind them.

Separately, Zelnick addressed product placement and brand integration in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Despite NBA 2K’s well-known partnerships with real-world brands—including celebrity appearances—GTA 6 will not feature product placement deals. Zelnick emphasized that Take-Two must remain “true to the underlying intellectual property and true to our consumers,” noting that the fictional world of GTA should be entirely original. This decision reflects the publisher’s commitment to maintaining franchise integrity rather than pursuing additional monetization opportunities through brand partnerships.
