“Another comical decision”: Warcraft 3: Legacy just landed on Battle.net, but the Reforged disaster isn’t over

Blizzard has released Warcraft 3: Legacy on Battle.net, providing players access to the original 1.29 client from The Frozen Throne era. The Legacy version is available for offline and LAN play only, accessible through the Battle.net client by navigating to the Warcraft 3: Reforged page, clicking the menu above the Play button, and selecting Legacy 1.29.

This release addresses the significant disappointment that followed Warcraft 3: Reforged’s 2020 launch, which was widely criticized by both players and critics and received poor user scores on Metacritic. By offering access to the classic version, Blizzard acknowledges community frustration with the remaster and provides an alternative for players who preferred the original experience.

The move represents a redemptive gesture following Blizzard’s successful Diablo 2: Resurrected remake in 2021. The Warcraft 3: Legacy release highlights the importance of preserving classic gaming experiences while maintaining them on modern distribution platforms. It demonstrates Blizzard’s willingness to respond to player feedback regarding its legacy properties, even when that feedback includes criticism of its modern remasters.
