After a glitch accidentally gave away a beloved RPG for free, the developer is letting you keep it

In early April, a glitch on the Xbox and Microsoft Store briefly made Wasteland Remastered, the 2020 remaster of the classic RPG, completely free to download. However, the accidentally liberated copies didn’t function properly—players who grabbed the game during the window found themselves with a non-functional version.

InExile Entertainment and Microsoft quickly patched the issue and revoked licenses from those who had downloaded it, seemingly ending another chapter in the internet’s history of accidental free games. But the story took an unexpectedly wholesome turn. Rather than leaving affected players with nothing, inExile decided to let everyone who downloaded the game during the glitch keep it—and the studio went further by providing a working copy to all those who originally received the broken version.

The developer’s generous response stands in contrast to typical corporate damage control, choosing community goodwill over strict enforcement. Players who initially grabbed the non-functional download will keep access to a fully playable version of the game, transforming what could have been a public relations disaster into a positive moment for the studio’s relationship with its fanbase.
