Don’t Expect Product Placement in GTA 6 — the CEO of Take-Two Says It Won’t Do Real World Brand Partnerships Because ‘All the Brands Are Made Up’
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not feature real-world product placement or brand partnerships, despite the game’s anticipated record-breaking launch. The announcement came during remarks at the iicon conference for gaming industry leaders.
Zelnick explained that the decision aligns with GTA’s core identity as satirical commentary on American society and culture. Rather than featuring actual consumer brands, the game will continue the franchise’s tradition of populating its world with entirely fictional parody brands—such as Sprunk (a parody of Sprite) and Burger Shot—that mock Western consumerism and corporate excess.
The CEO stated that these fictional brands will help keep GTA 6 “pure,” allowing the game to maintain its satirical edge without the complications of real-world commercial tie-ins. This approach prioritizes creative vision and satirical integrity over additional revenue streams, with Take-Two willing to forgo lucrative product placement deals.
The decision is particularly notable given GTA 6’s massive commercial potential—the game is tracking to become the biggest entertainment launch of all-time and potentially the best-selling game ever. Such a dominant platform would typically present significant monetisation opportunities for brand partnerships, making Take-Two’s choice to exclude real brands strategically significant.
