Morrowind turns 24 today, so come Nerevar and celebrate as an Elder Scrolls tax collector with this huge OpenMW quest mod

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind celebrated its 24th anniversary on May 1st, 2026, marking the original release date from May 1, 2002. To commemorate the occasion, the modding community launched a modathon on Nexus Mods, with one of the early standout entries being a new quest mod titled “Death and Taxes.”

Created by modder MollyAvast, the “Death and Taxes” mod is built for OpenMW, the open-source reimplementation of Morrowind’s engine. The mod significantly expands the game’s quest content with a unique focus on tax-related missions and bureaucratic activities. Rather than engaging with Dagoth Ur and the game’s main narrative, players can now undertake numerous tasks for the Imperial Offices of Census and Excise, the fictional imperial bureaucracy within the game’s world. The mod introduces substantially more tax-adjacent missions than players would typically encounter in a standard playthrough.

This modathon and the community’s continued support demonstrate the enduring legacy of Morrowind despite its age. The availability of OpenMW and active modding communities on platforms like Nexus Mods have kept the 24-year-old RPG relevant and playable for new and returning players seeking fresh experiences in the game’s richly detailed world of Morrowind.
