Resident Evil Movie Director Reveals The Scariest Scene In The Series That Made Him “Nope Out”

Zach Cregger, director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie, has shared insights into his creative approach to the project and revealed which moment from the game series left the biggest impression on him.

During an interview, Cregger disclosed that the scariest scene he encountered in the Resident Evil franchise was from 2021’s Resident Evil Village. Specifically, he was disturbed by the dollhouse sequence in which players descend into a basement and assemble a giant doll on a table, culminating in a terrifying baby creature that hunts the player. Cregger experienced this moment while playing the game in virtual reality, which amplified the impact. He highlighted the disturbing baby sounds and complete darkness as particularly unnerving elements that caused him to “nope out” of the sequence.

Beyond his personal reaction to the games, Cregger has outlined his vision for the film adaptation. His Resident Evil movie will not adapt any storylines or characters directly from the games. Instead, he describes his approach as drawing inspiration from the games while creating an original narrative experience. This decision represents a departure from traditional game-to-film adaptations that typically attempt to faithfully recreate game stories.

Cregger explained that his film will follow a character on a journey from point A to point B, delivering what he describes as a “crazy journey” that captures the spirit of the game series rather than retelling specific stories. His reasoning suggests that attempting to faithfully adapt existing game narratives would not translate as effectively to film.

As writer and director, Cregger has acknowledged that longtime fans of the Resident Evil games may not respond positively to his approach of creating original content inspired by rather than based on the source material.
