South Korean Supreme Court orders Dark and Darker dev Ironmace to pay $3.84 million to Nexon
South Korea’s Supreme Court has ruled that Ironmace, developer of Dark and Darker, must pay Nexon approximately $3.84 million (5.7 billion won) in damages, concluding the civil portion of an ongoing legal dispute between the publisher and developer.
Dark and Darker, a fantasy dungeon crawler with extraction mechanics, generated significant buzz at Steam’s Next Fest in 2023 before legal complications emerged. The dispute centers on Ironmace’s founding team, whose members are all former Nexon employees. Nexon alleged that the team unlawfully leveraged company resources or intellectual property in developing the game.
The Supreme Court’s decision represents a mixed outcome for both parties rather than a definitive victory. While Nexon secured a damages award, the judgment may not fully compensate for alleged losses or address underlying claims. Meanwhile, Ironmace faces a substantial financial penalty but avoided a complete legal defeat. Notably, a separate criminal case related to Nexon’s accusations remains active, suggesting the full legal resolution of the matter continues beyond this civil ruling.
