Exclusive games are still the top reason for playing on console, survey suggests
A Circana Q1 Future of Video Games consumer survey has found that exclusive games remain the primary driver for console gaming, though consumer motivation for this factor has declined significantly year-on-year, dropping by 8 percentage points.
The survey underscores that while exclusive titles continue to influence console adoption and usage, their appeal appears to be waning among players. This trend suggests that the traditional value proposition of platform exclusives—a cornerstone of console manufacturer strategies—may be gradually losing its competitive advantage.
The second most important reason respondents cite for console play is social connectivity: the presence of friends and family on the same platform. This finding highlights the growing importance of community and network effects in the gaming ecosystem, a factor that has become increasingly critical as multiplayer gaming and online communities have become central to the gaming experience.
The data reflects broader shifts in the gaming landscape, including the rise of cross-platform play, cloud gaming services, and alternative gaming platforms. While the survey confirms that exclusives remain a meaningful factor in console choice, the declining enthusiasm suggests platform holders may need to balance exclusive content strategies with other compelling features such as network effects, service offerings, and player engagement to maintain platform loyalty and market position.
