Miyamoto Discusses Princess Peach’s Growth in Mario Movies

Creator Shigeru Miyamoto has discussed the evolution of Princess Peach’s character in the Super Mario Bros. movie franchise, reflecting on how her role has transformed from the traditional “damsel in distress” narrative to a more prominent and empowered position in recent films.

Historically, Princess Peach’s character in the video game series has been defined primarily by her need for rescue, with Mario undertaking missions to save her from Bowser’s clutches. This dynamic remained consistent across decades of games. However, the Super Mario Bros. movies have taken a different creative approach to the character’s development.

In the film adaptations, particularly in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026), Peach has been reimagined as a more confident and capable heroine. Rather than serving solely as a goal to be rescued, she now actively participates in the story and demonstrates her own agency and strength. This shift represents a conscious creative choice by filmmakers and Miyamoto, who recognized that cinematic storytelling requires different character dynamics than video game narratives.

Miyamoto explained in a recent interview with Japan’s Oricon that the filmmaking process necessitated a different creative mindset compared to game development. The transition from passive damsel to active hero reflects broader contemporary storytelling trends favoring more complex and empowered female characters, allowing Peach to contribute meaningfully to the narrative rather than function as a plot device.
