Reggie Fils-Aimé Explains Nintendo’s Stance on Layoffs
Reggie Fils-Aimé, the former president of Nintendo of America, has recently explained the company’s historical stance on mass layoffs—a discussion that gains particular relevance as the gaming industry grapples with widespread workforce reductions.
Fils-Aimé led Nintendo of America from 2006 to 2019, a period that saw major successes including the Nintendo Wii and the launch of the original Nintendo Switch. The tenure also encompassed the commercially disappointing Wii U. During this challenging period, rather than immediately turning to mass layoffs, the company pursued a different approach: Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo Company Limited at the time, took a voluntary 50% pay reduction in 2014 following Nintendo’s profit decline caused by weak Wii U performance. This salary reduction was intended to last for a defined period.
This approach contrasts sharply with the current state of the gaming industry, where major publishers and studios have announced significant layoffs. Nintendo’s historical strategy of having senior leadership accept personal financial sacrifice rather than resort to immediate workforce reductions reflects a different corporate philosophy regarding employee retention and organizational stability during financial downturns.
