Gamers May Get Refunds After Sony PlayStation Digital Store Lawsuit

Sony has agreed to a $7.85 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought by PlayStation Network users in the United States. The Northern District of California approved the preliminary settlement on April 8, addressing allegations that Sony monopolized the digital game market.

The lawsuit centers on Sony’s decision to stop selling game-specific vouchers in April 2019, eliminating a retail distribution channel that allowed customers to purchase digital games from third-party retailers. By ceasing these sales through external vendors, Sony allegedly eliminated competition between retailers and forced consumers to purchase games exclusively through the PlayStation Network, restricting consumer choice.

The settlement will provide compensation to all U.S. PlayStation Network users who purchased specific digital games through PSN between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. Affected players may be eligible for PSN credit reimbursement as part of the settlement terms.

This lawsuit is one of several legal battles Sony is currently facing related to its digital marketplace practices and distribution strategies. The settlement represents a significant development in ongoing discussions about platform holder responsibilities and competitive market practices in the digital gaming space.
