Subnautica 2 devs revived a cut Subnautica feature for the sequel

Subnautica 2 will launch in early access on May 14, marking the next installment in Unknown Worlds’ underwater exploration franchise. The development team shared insights into their design philosophy for the sequel, which is technically the third game in the series following the original Subnautica and the 2021 spin-off Below Zero.

When developing Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds faced a fundamental question: what defines a Subnautica game? According to game design lead Anthony Gallegos, the answer centers on delivering “a really cool underwater alien world to explore that had surprises for people.” Rather than simply revisiting the same planet as the original game, the developers chose to create a fresh experience, recognizing that players might find the original setting less surprising at this point.

The path to early access hasn’t been entirely smooth. The game experienced a notable pre-release period that included a significant delay, which generated considerable discussion among the community. Despite these setbacks, Unknown Worlds pressed forward to meet the May 14 early access launch date.

The title reveals that the developers have revived a feature that was originally cut from the first game, incorporating it into the sequel. This decision reflects the team’s commitment to exploring what worked conceptually in earlier iterations and how those ideas might be refined for a new adventure.

As with any early access release, Subnautica 2 will evolve based on player feedback before its full release. The early access model allows Unknown Worlds to refine the underwater exploration experience while building on the franchise’s signature blend of survival, discovery, and environmental storytelling.
