Another Highly Regarded PSVR2 Dev on the Brink After Mass Layoffs
Survios, a prominent virtual reality game developer, has undergone devastating mass layoffs that have effectively shuttered the Los Angeles-based studio. According to multiple LinkedIn posts from departing employees, the company has let go most of its workforce, with the entire development team being impacted.
Combat designer Dylan Ralston confirmed that the studio will be “essentially shuttered” and that all “team members responsible for development [are] being let go.” Senior game designer Alissa Smith reported that she and the majority of the development team were affected by the layoffs, while senior technical sound designer Tim Schumann also confirmed his job loss, noting he had anticipated the closure.
Survios positioned itself as “the world’s leading VR games studio” and had established a strong portfolio of virtual reality titles, particularly for PlayStation platforms. The studio developed several acclaimed PSVR and PSVR2 experiences, including Sprint Vector, Raw Data, Alien: Rogue Incursion, and CREED: Rise to Glory, demonstrating expertise in bringing action-oriented gameplay to VR platforms.
The closure represents another significant loss in the VR gaming industry, which has faced considerable challenges despite optimism around next-generation hardware like PSVR2. The layoffs follow a broader trend of studio shutdowns and workforce reductions affecting the gaming sector, suggesting ongoing financial pressures on developers focused on specialized platforms. The fate of Survios’ existing titles and unreleased projects remains unclear.
