Bungie Confirms It Has Marathon Story Plans for ’the Next Few Years’ But Nothing Is Completely ‘Locked in’ Yet
Bungie has confirmed that its extraction shooter Marathon has story plans extending years into the future. During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, creative director Julia Nardin stated, “We know where we want to take the story over the next few years,” though she emphasized that details aren’t completely locked in yet.
Marathon launched in March 2026 across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. The game has sold an estimated 1.2 million copies in its opening weeks, with potential sales reaching over 2 million to date. However, the game has experienced a significant player decline on Steam, falling from a peak of 88,337 concurrent players at launch to 14,375 as of reporting.
Despite the player count decline, Bungie remains committed to the game’s long-term development. Nardin’s comments suggest the studio has a foundational narrative framework in place but remains open to adjustments. She indicated that the story’s evolution will partly be influenced by player feedback and engagement, allowing for flexibility in execution as the live-service game develops.
The confirmation of multi-year story plans demonstrates Bungie’s confidence in Marathon’s future, even as the game navigates typical post-launch player retention challenges.
