Cozzilla, the notorious 1977 Italian re-edit of the original 1954 Godzilla film, is finally receiving an official Blu-ray release after decades of obscurity. Directed by Luigi Cozzi, the film is widely regarded as one of the strangest entries in the Godzilla franchise across its 38-film history spanning seven decades.
The film stands out for its surreal approach to the source material. Marketed as a “Spectorama” edition, Cozzilla reimagined Godzilla, King of the Monsters! through an experimental lens—less a straightforward adaptation than a fever dream that spliced authentic footage with distinctive new elements to create a wholly unique experience.
Prior to this release, Cozzilla had languished in obscurity, circulating only through low-quality VHS bootlegs. Its absence from the Criterion Collection’s 2019 Godzilla box set further cemented its status as a cult curiosity. The forthcoming Blu-ray represents a significant moment for film preservation, providing proper archival in high definition and ensuring this peculiar reinterpretation reaches wider audiences while being preserved for future generations.
