Randy Pitchford, co-founder and head of Gearbox Software, clarified the studio’s artificial intelligence policy following backlash to an AI-generated image he posted on social media. Pitchford shared an image created using ChatGPT on X, explaining that he asked the AI tool to generate a “selfie” representing how the AI perceives itself based on their interactions. The image, which featured an AI working at Gearbox, drew criticism from followers who derided it as “AI slop.”
In response, Pitchford clarified that the intent was not to promote AI use at Gearbox but to showcase the AI’s own self-perception. When a commenter suggested a genuine photograph would have been better received, Pitchford argued the critic missed the point—the image was meant to depict the AI itself, not him.
Following the backlash, Pitchford has emphasized that Gearbox maintains a firm no-AI policy for professional and game development purposes. He stressed that the ChatGPT experiment was a personal exploration conducted on his own time with no connection to the studio’s actual development practices.
