Pokémon Scalpers Are Now Reselling Limited Edition Pop-Tarts
Scalpers are now targeting limited-edition Pokémon-themed Pop-Tarts, the latest casualty in an escalating merchandise crisis. The Pokémon Company and Target collaborated on exclusive Frosted Vanilla Pop-Tart boxes featuring an exclusive Pikachu design, retailing for just under $3 per box. However, resellers have immediately begun purchasing stock from Target stores and listing the boxes on eBay at dramatically inflated prices—typically $10 or more, with some listings asking as much as $34.99 per box plus shipping.
This situation exemplifies an endemic scalping problem within the Pokémon collector community. What started as a significant issue with trading cards has expanded to encompass virtually all Pokémon merchandise collaborations. The problem has become so widespread that retailers and The Pokémon Company have implemented various countermeasures, including purchase limits and customer verification systems.
The Pop-Tart scalping coincides with Pokémon’s 30th anniversary celebration, a period marked by numerous special collaborations and limited releases. While these breakfast items represent a relatively low-stakes product compared to collectible cards, their targeting by scalpers demonstrates how pervasive and indiscriminate reseller operations have become. The intended accessibility of a $3 commemorative item has been undermined by artificial scarcity and market manipulation, frustrating fans and raising questions about the sustainability of merchandise partnerships in the collectibles space.
