Uproar Over Grace’s DLSS 5 Makeover Proves Original Design Was Right, Says Resident Evil Requiem Producer
Nvidia revealed its DLSS 5 upscaling and frame generation technology in March 2026, introducing an AI-powered system designed to enhance visual fidelity with photorealistic lighting and materials. However, the initial unveiling sparked significant backlash from players and industry figures who criticized how drastically the technology altered character appearances in demonstrated games.
Resident Evil Requiem’s protagonist Grace Ashcroft became the focal point of the controversy, with the DLSS 5 demo showing substantial changes to her facial features, including her lips, eyes, and hair. Players widely rejected what some called the “AI slop” aesthetic, posting numerous memes and critiques online about how the technology transformed the character contrary to the developers’ original artistic vision.
Despite the negative reception, Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa took an unexpectedly positive view of the situation. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Kumazawa stated that the strong player reaction against the AI-altered version of Grace actually served as validation of Capcom’s design choices. He explained that the backlash demonstrated players genuinely appreciated the original character design and preferred it unchanged, which he framed as proof that the development team “got the design right” from the start.
While Kumazawa noted he couldn’t comment on Capcom’s direct involvement in the DLSS 5 demo, he emphasized that the widespread preference for Grace’s original appearance represented a positive outcome. The incident highlighted broader concerns about how AI upscaling technologies might unilaterally alter artistic direction in games without developer consent, but for Capcom, the controversy ultimately affirmed the quality of their character design decisions.
