Next Call of Duty will drop PS4, ending 12 years of support on the platform

Activision has officially confirmed that the next Call of Duty game will not launch on PlayStation 4, ending over a decade of support for the platform. The announcement came on May 4, 2026, via the official Call of Duty social media account, directly addressing rumors that the upcoming title would continue cross-generation compatibility.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, released in 2025, was the final entry in the franchise to support PS4, concluding a 12-year cycle that began with Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013. The series will also be dropping support for Xbox One, ending 14 years of compatibility with Microsoft’s last-generation console. This marks the first time since Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 that a new mainline entry won’t support eighth-generation hardware.

The confirmation followed claims from leaker Alaix that the upcoming Modern Warfare entry was being playtested on PS4. Activision directly addressed the speculation, stating: “Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4.”

This decision reflects broader industry trends toward fully leveraging newer console capabilities. Call of Duty has historically maintained cross-generational support longer than most major franchises, accommodating players reluctant to upgrade. However, legacy hardware support has constrained technical ambitions and reportedly caused performance issues. Dropping last-gen compatibility will enable enhanced features like ray tracing and improved visuals on current-generation platforms and PC.
