Aliens 3D Version a Possibility, Says Director James Cameron
Director James Cameron has announced plans to convert the 1986 science fiction thriller Aliens into stereoscopic 3D, marking another chapter in the filmmaker’s history of revisiting and refining his own work. In a recent Letterboxd interview, Cameron noted that advancements in 3D conversion technology have made the prospect more appealing than ever, stating that “the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps.”
Cameron has long been an enthusiastic advocate for 3D filmmaking technology, championing the format through films like Avatar and Titanic. His track record of re-releasing and remastering his films is well-documented—he’s provided multiple director’s cuts of classics such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Abyss, and in 2023 defended controversial AI-upscaled 4K transfers of True Lies and Titanic.
The proposed 3D conversion of Aliens reflects Cameron’s view that the film remains culturally relevant nearly four decades after its original release. He emphasized that Aliens continues to be rediscovered by audiences across generations, making it what he calls an “evergreen” property worthy of ongoing investment. The film has already been remastered multiple times for home video formats, including Blu-ray and 4K releases, indicating a pattern of technological enhancement throughout its lifespan.
