Reality Fracture’s wild new Commander deck is one-of-a-kind, MTG designer says
Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Reality Fracture set will introduce a one-of-a-kind Commander deck featuring an ultra-rare color combination that has virtually never been explored in the game’s history. According to MTG’s official card database, there are only two cards in the entire trading card game that use the white-blue-black-red (WUBR) color combination, making this pairing exceptionally rare compared to other color pairings.
Most of Magic’s color combinations have established names tied to the game’s various worlds and mechanics. For example, blue-black is known as “Dimir,” black-red as “Rakdos,” with many combinations named after Ravnica guilds, Tarkir clans, or Strixhaven colleges. However, the four-color WUBR combination lacks an official or widely recognized name. MTG’s principal designer Gavin Verhey simply refers to it phonetically as WUBR, pronounced “woober”—a clever callback to the five-color combination WUBRG, pronounced “wooburg.”
Despite the extreme rarity of this color combination in MTG’s history, Wizards of the Coast has chosen to spotlight it prominently with a preconstructed Commander deck in Reality Fracture. This represents an unusual design decision, as color combinations are typically developed over time with multiple supporting cards and mechanics. The deck will introduce players to an entirely unexplored corner of Magic’s design space.
Verhey discussed the design decision during an in-person interview at MagicCon: Las Vegas 2026, explaining the reasoning behind featuring such a rarely-used color pairing in a flagship product. The Reality Fracture set appears to be pushing boundaries in Commander deck design by exploring previously untapped combinations.
