Copilot Is Kaput On Xbox Consoles

Microsoft has discontinued development of Copilot on Xbox consoles and is winding down the mobile version of the AI assistant, according to new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. The announcement came as part of a broader leadership restructuring at the company, with Sharma promoting new leaders and bringing in executives from Microsoft’s CoreAI division to help “move faster, deepen our connection with the community, and address friction for both players and developers.”

The reversal is particularly notable given that Microsoft had announced just two months prior in March that Copilot would be coming to Xbox Series X|S later in 2026. Gaming Copilot was designed to function as a personal gaming sidekick, helping players during gameplay by providing in-game assistance, strategy guidance, and personalized gaming recommendations. It had been available in beta through the Xbox mobile app and Windows 11 Game Bar.

Sharma’s statement indicated that Xbox is retiring features that “don’t align with where we’re headed,” suggesting the company is reassessing its AI strategy. The decision reflects broader consumer skepticism toward AI integration across the industry, as well as Microsoft’s efforts to refocus Xbox’s efforts on core gaming experiences and community engagement. The leadership changes brought in Jared Palmer, formerly vice president of CoreAI, as the new vice president of engineering at Xbox, alongside other CoreAI executives taking on key roles within the division.
