Wizards of the Coast declines to voluntarily recognize game worker union
Magic: The Gathering Arena developers have formed a union, United Wizards of the Coast—CWA, in partnership with the Communications Workers of America. The union requested voluntary recognition from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro by May 1, 2026, but management declined to respond directly to the request, instead addressing only press inquiries.
According to union organizers, the deadline has passed without direct acknowledgment from company leadership. The union claims that while management publicly states commitment to ensuring employees are “heard, valued, and supported,” they failed to meaningfully engage with workers’ unionization efforts.
The newly formed union is advocating for protections against layoffs, opposition to return-to-office policies, limitations on generative AI adoption, and restrictions on mandatory crunch periods. Union representatives expressed confidence that recognition remains “inevitable” and called on the gaming community to maintain pressure on the company.
This marks a significant labor development in the gaming industry, as Magic: The Gathering Arena developers join other recent unionization efforts across major studios. The lack of voluntary recognition may lead to formal union certification procedures through regulatory channels.
