The Paranormasight games exist thanks to high-profile indies, Square Enix says
Square Enix has greenlit a sequel to Paranormasight, titled The Mermaid’s Curse, following the success of the original game, The Seven Mysteries of Honjo. While specific sales figures haven’t been disclosed, the game’s performance was strong enough to warrant a greenlight for the sequel.
This decision is significant given Square Enix’s 2024 commitment to prioritize “quality over quantity” after that year’s slate of remakes and spinoffs underperformed. The greenlight suggests that well-crafted games can succeed even in the increasingly crowded gaming market, where nearly 20,000 games launched on Steam in 2025 alone.
According to Takanari Ishiyama, the writer and director of both Paranormasight titles, the success of the original game reflects a broader industry trend: the rise of high-profile, quality games from indie developers. This phenomenon has become a significant factor in the industry, helping certain titles stand out despite the massive influx of new releases that makes discovery increasingly challenging for smaller developers.
The Paranormasight series demonstrates that even with thousands of games competing for player attention, well-executed titles can still achieve commercial success and secure publisher support for sequels, challenging the notion that market saturation inevitably limits success.
