Metacore restructuring to the tune of ‘up to 160’ redundancies

Metacore, the Finnish studio behind the popular mobile puzzle game Merge Mansion, is undergoing significant restructuring following its full acquisition by Supercell. The restructuring will result in up to 160 job cuts in Finland alone—representing over half of Metacore’s workforce of more than 280 employees. Additional roles are also at risk at the studio’s operations in Germany and Sweden.

The restructuring comes as Metacore faces operational challenges. The company’s flagship title, Merge Mansion, launched in 2020 but has seen its growth plateau in recent years. More critically, Metacore’s attempts to launch new games globally have all failed to succeed, leaving the company without a pipeline of new revenue-generating titles.

Supercell, the Finnish maker of Clash of Clans, was already a major stakeholder in Metacore before this full acquisition. The move aligns with Supercell’s strategy to consolidate its portfolio, as it plans to integrate Merge Mansion into its existing live-service games management. By refocusing Metacore on its core successful title rather than pursuing risky new launches, Supercell aims to improve operational efficiency and better position the company in an increasingly competitive mobile gaming market.
