Ed Boon Would Love to See a Street Fighter Character in Mortal Kombat, Plays Down Rivalry
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has expressed interest in adding a Street Fighter character as a guest fighter to a future Mortal Kombat game. In an interview with Collider while promoting the Mortal Kombat 2 film, Boon confirmed that another Mortal Kombat title is in development at NetherRealm Studios, though he declined to share specific details about the upcoming project.
When asked about potential guest characters, Boon highlighted Street Fighter as a character roster he’d like to see represented. Such a crossover would mark a historic milestone for fighting game fans, as the two franchises have maintained a three-decade-long rivalry without such collaboration. Recent Mortal Kombat titles have featured numerous guest characters including Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Alien, Predator, Rambo, Conan, Ghostface, RoboCop, and the Terminator.
Boon downplayed the competitive dynamic between the two franchises, characterizing the long-standing rivalry as lighthearted and expressing no hard feelings following recent comments made by the Mortal Kombat 2 movie cast at the Game Awards. He described these exchanges as a natural part of the franchises’ ongoing history, suggesting the rivalry is more playful than serious.
The revelation comes as NetherRealm Studios continues to expand Mortal Kombat’s roster with high-profile guest appearances, maintaining the series’ tradition of bringing iconic characters from film, television, and popular culture to the fighting game series.
