Borderlands 4 On Switch 2 Is “Doable,” Take-Two Says After Gearbox Said Platform Was “Perfect” For It
Borderlands 4’s Nintendo Switch 2 port has been indefinitely paused, though Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick clarified the decision is not a cancellation and the version remains technically achievable. The port was originally scheduled for release but delayed in September, just a week before launch. Take-Two formally announced in February via its quarterly earnings report that development had been paused.
According to Zelnick’s recent comments to Game File, Gearbox prioritized addressing performance issues with Borderlands 4 on PC before continuing the Switch 2 version. Rather than developing the handheld port while the PC build remained problematic, the studio focused on fixing those foundational performance matters first. Zelnick expressed confidence the Switch 2 port is technically feasible, characterizing the pause as temporary rather than an abandoned project.
The situation contrasts with Gearbox’s earlier statements describing the Switch 2 as “perfect” for the game. With all pre-orders for the Switch 2 version canceled, many players had assumed the port would not release. However, Zelnick’s comments provide reassurance it remains possible once performance optimization concludes.
The development pause reflects the complexity of simultaneous multi-platform development, particularly when one platform requires optimization before others can progress. Take-Two noted Switch 2 is not among its primary platforms, explaining the prioritization of other builds. While no timeline exists for if or when Borderlands 4 will ultimately release on Switch 2, Zelnick’s characterization suggests the possibility remains open pending PC performance resolution.
