Former LucasArts, Ubisoft veteran Clint Hocking founds new studio

Clint Hocking, a veteran game developer and creative director known for his work on acclaimed titles including Far Cry 2 and Splinter Cell, has founded a new independent studio called Build Machine Games. Hocking unexpectedly departed from Ubisoft earlier in 2026, where he was serving as creative director on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

The newly launched Build Machine Games is described as a “lean and fast” yet “bold and ambitious” studio. According to Hocking’s announcement on LinkedIn, the studio aims to expand the expressive range and power of gaming as a medium by creating “emotionally resonant, socially relevant games that challenge players’ perspectives, pre-conceptions, and empathy as much as their reasoning and reflexes.”

The studio is currently in its recruitment phase, seeking experienced developers interested in a flat organizational structure and hands-on working environment. Notably, Build Machine Games is currently accepting applications from Canadian residents only. Open positions include senior technical roles, such as a programmer to help define the studio’s overarching technology direction.

Hocking’s departure from Ubisoft came as a surprise to the industry, occurring just months before his new venture’s announcement. His track record includes significant contributions to multiple major franchises beyond Far Cry 2, including the Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs series.
