Dave Filoni is wrong to view Darth Vader as separate from Anakin Skywalker
With Kathleen Kennedy stepping down as President of Lucasfilm after 13 years, Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan are taking leadership of the Star Wars franchise. At a May 4th event celebrating the finale of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, Filoni articulated his creative philosophy regarding one of the saga’s most iconic characters: Darth Vader.
Filoni stated that in his view, Vader should be understood as distinct from Anakin Skywalker, explaining that “he’s not Anakin” and “doesn’t recognize” his former self. This perspective has drawn criticism from commentators who argue this interpretation misunderstands the character’s fundamental narrative—that Vader’s tragic arc centers on Anakin’s fall and internal conflict between his dark side persona and his remaining humanity.
