As Injustice 3 rumours heat up, NetherRealm boss Ed Boon says the studio is “actively pursuing” a new Mortal Kombat

NetherRealm Studios is actively pursuing a new Mortal Kombat game, according to Mortal Kombat co-creator and creative director Ed Boon. Speaking with Collider, Boon confirmed the studio’s intentions to continue the long-running fighting game franchise, though he stopped short of revealing specific details about the project’s scope or timeline.

“We’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more as well,” Boon stated, adding that “there are a lot of pots on the stove” for the studio beyond just games, including other forms of media.

The confirmation comes as Mortal Kombat 1, released in 2023, proved commercially successful with 8 million units sold despite receiving mixed critical reception compared to previous modern entries in the series. Boon was promoting the theatrical release of Mortal Kombat 2, the movie sequel debuting this week, when he made the announcement.

The news arrives amid ongoing rumors that Injustice 3 may be NetherRealm’s next immediate project. Boon indicated he could not reveal which specific game the studio would develop next without “getting in trouble,” suggesting external pressures from publisher Warner Bros. Games prevent him from sharing more details. Previously, in September 2024, Boon revealed that NetherRealm determined its next game back in 2021.

While a new Mortal Kombat is confirmed to be in development, it remains unclear whether it will be the studio’s next release or if Injustice 3 will take priority.
