EVE Online studio CCP Games turns independent and rebrands as Fenris Creations
CCP Games, the legendary Icelandic developer behind the long-running EVE Online MMO, has gone independent and rebranded as Fenris Creations. The studio was sold back to its management team by South Korean publisher Pearl Abyss in a deal valued at $120 million—a significant return after eight years of ownership following Pearl Abyss’s 2018 acquisition for approximately $425 million.
The rebranding and independence restore the studio to a governance model similar to its pre-2018 operations, with Fenris Creations now responsible for its own strategy, operations, and creative direction under its own Board of Directors. This shift comes after a mutual strategic review between the studio and Pearl Abyss revealed fundamental operational differences.
Accompanying the independence announcement is a notable partnership with Google DeepMind, which has taken a minority stake in the studio. Under this collaboration, an offline version of EVE Online will serve as a testing environment for Google DeepMind’s AI research, allowing the tech giant to develop and evaluate AI models in a controlled sandbox setting. This partnership represents an innovative use of gaming environments for AI training and development.
The move marks the conclusion of a complex eight-year period under Pearl Abyss ownership, with unclear tangible game industry outcomes despite the substantial investment. For EVE Online’s community and the broader gaming landscape, the transition signals a return to independent studio leadership while opening new frontiers for AI integration with established gaming universes.
