Shigeru Miyamoto has imposed a creative restriction on the Super Mario Movie franchise: no “dirty jokes.” Speaking in a recent interview about the production approach for the film series, Miyamoto explained his philosophy, saying he regards children as “adults, they just don’t have as much knowledge yet” — and therefore entertains them differently than one might assume.
Despite the ban on crude humor, Nintendo has not ruled out the potential appearance of Wario in future films, even though the character is famous for his flatulent attacks and gross-out humor in games like Super Smash Bros. Miyamoto stated that there is nothing inherently preventing Wario from joining the cast, despite his restrictions on the style of jokes permitted in the films.
Wario’s potential appearance would mark the character’s film debut after previous rumors suggested he might appear as an antagonist in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — speculation that ultimately proved unfounded.
Producer Chris Meledandri has been instructed to follow Miyamoto’s creative guidelines regarding the tone of the film series, though the ban on crude humor doesn’t appear to extend to character casting decisions.
