Mortal Kombat 2: Here Is How Much It’s Expected To Make In Theaters This Weekend
Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation, is set to premiere on May 8 and is projected to have a strong opening at the box office. The film, produced by Warner Bros. Discovery, features Karl Urban reprising his role as Johnny Cage in a more prominent position than in the original film.
Independent box office tracking data projects the film will earn between $40 million and $45 million during its opening weekend in North America, where it will be released across 3,400 theaters. Warner Bros. has provided a more conservative internal estimate of $35 million for the region. Industry projections suggest the film is likely to recoup its production budget during its theatrical run.
The original Mortal Kombat (2021) made $84.4 million globally during its theatrical release, which came five years ago following COVID-related delays. The first film was also made available simultaneously on HBO Max, where it found significant success with audiences. Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to substantially outperform its predecessor at the global box office.
This weekend’s box office will feature direct competition from The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is currently in its second weekend of release and is projected to earn between $38 million and $42 million. Additionally, the franchise’s success appears to be extending beyond the current film, as Mortal Kombat III is already in development.
