2K’s NFL Game Is Dead, Take-Two CEO Rules Out Return to Baseball Games
Take-Two has officially confirmed that the revival of NFL 2K will not move forward. During an interview with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that “What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not,” acknowledging that development struggles and multiple direction shifts prevented completion.
The announcement concludes a six-year effort following Take-Two’s 2020 partnership announcement with the NFL. The deal was structured to cover ’non-simulation’ games, allowing Take-Two to develop arcade-style football titles without competing with EA’s exclusive Madden franchise. However, development was restarted multiple times since inception, with the project requiring repeated course corrections and creative rethinks.
The only product released under the partnership was the mobile title NFL 2K Playmakers in 2024. Despite the console revival’s failure, Take-Two expressed openness to potential future NFL projects, stating they remain “open-minded” should another opportunity present itself.
The cancellation is a setback for fans hoping to see a modern version of the classic NFL 2K series, which originally ended in 2004 after EA secured exclusive simulation rights to the NFL license. While the non-simulation restriction was intended to create separate competitive space, Take-Two ultimately could not develop a successful formula within those creative constraints.
