Rahul Kohli’s Saros performance is terrific, but his character is the worst
Housemarque’s latest roguelike shooter, Saros, follows Arjun Devraj, a member of the fourth expedition (Echelon IV) sent by Soltari to mine lucenite on the alien planet Carcosa. Driven by a personal mission, Arjun searches for Nitya, someone who arrived before him despite widespread evidence suggesting she perished like most others exposed to Carcosa’s deadly environment.
The game represents an iteration on Housemarque’s previous title, Returnal, adapting its challenging formula toward a more accessible power fantasy experience. According to the review, Rahul Kohli delivers a terrific vocal performance as protagonist Arjun Devraj, bringing depth to the character through his voice acting work. However, the review’s framing suggests that while Kohli’s performance excels, the character itself presents problematic elements that warrant scrutiny.
The narrative incorporates themes of exploration, survival, and personal stakes as Arjun navigates both the hostile environment and the mystery surrounding Nitya’s fate. The game appears to blend roguelike mechanics with shooter gameplay, maintaining Housemarque’s signature design sensibilities while evolving the studio’s approach to difficulty and progression.
