A remake of Star Fox 64 is coming to Switch 2 this June

Nintendo announced a new Star Fox game during a surprise Nintendo Direct presentation on May 6, 2026. Simply titled Star Fox, this marks the franchise’s first new entry in a decade, with the last mainline game being Star Fox Zero on Wii U in 2015. The game is an extensive remake of the classic 1997 Nintendo 64 title, Star Fox 64.

The new Star Fox features completely overhauled visuals and redesigned characters that maintain a more realistic aesthetic. While the level layouts closely follow the original Star Fox 64, the game includes new cinematic elements such as pre-mission briefings and expanded cutscenes with full voice acting and orchestral soundtrack accompaniment. Players will pilot the Arwing alongside the familiar cast—Fox McCloud, Peppy Hare, Slippy Toad, and Falco Lombardi—through the Lylat system on an on-rails shooter experience.

Beyond the campaign, Star Fox introduces a new 4-vs-4 online multiplayer battle mode supporting up to eight players simultaneously. Team matches pit “Team Star Fox” against “Team Star Wolf,” with objectives varying by stage: Corneria features zone control, Fichina involves energy crystal collection, and Sector Y requires cargo retrieval missions. The game also supports co-op gameplay, local multiplayer, GameShare functionality, and amiibo compatibility.

Star Fox launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026. The digital version is priced at $49.99 (£41.99), with the physical edition costing $59.99 (£49.99). The game requires approximately 14.8GB of storage space. Interestingly, the announcement followed Fox McCloud’s prominent appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, serving as unexpected promotion for the title.
