Stranger Than Heaven Is A Yakuza Prequel With A Star-Studded Cast

RGG Studio, the developer behind the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, unveiled extensive details about Stranger Than Heaven during a special Xbox presentation on May 6, 2026. Originally announced at The Game Awards 2024 under the codename “Project Century,” the game has been confirmed as a prequel depicting the origins of the Tojo Clan, the iconic yakuza organization central to the Yakuza franchise.

The narrative spans 50 years across five distinct time periods and locations, beginning in 1915 Kokura and progressing through 1929 Kure, 1943 Osaka, 1951 Atami, and culminating in 1965 Kamurocho—the setting familiar to longtime series fans. Players follow Makoto Daito, a half-Japanese, half-American protagonist who journeys to Japan to escape prejudice, alongside his friend and rival Yu Shinjo.

The game features an eclectic celebrity cast, most notably Snoop Dogg, who voices Orpheus, described as a “cutthroat and charismatic” smuggler. Supporting cast members include Snoop Dogg’s son Cordell Broadus, singer Tori Kelly, and J-pop star Satoshi Fujihara. The game also incorporates archival recordings of late Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara, the legendary star of influential 1970s yakuza films that inspired RGG’s visual style.

Gameplay departs from traditional Yakuza action, incorporating entertainment management mechanics and innovative sound design—players create symphonies from environmental audio like sweeping brooms and train whistles. Stranger Than Heaven releases winter 2026 and will launch day-one on Xbox Game Pass, alongside PlayStation 5 and other platforms.
