These two Secrets of Strixhaven cards resurrect Magic’s oldest combo
Magic: The Gathering’s latest set, Secrets of Strixhaven, introduces cards that enable classic combo strategies, particularly benefiting Golgari (green/black) players. The set provides upgrades for the Witherbloom Pestilence preconstructed deck, with two cards forming a particularly powerful combination.
Stensian Sanguinist, a 2/2 Vampire Cleric, grants another creature Deathtouch. When that creature deals damage to a player—likely inevitable given the threat of losing a blocker—Stensian Sanguinist becomes “prepared,” a new mechanic introduced in this set. Once prepared, the card enables casting Exsanguinate, which drains opponents’ life totals while the controlling player gains life simultaneously.
The combo gains additional depth when paired with Yavimaya Bloomsage, also from the set, expanding the combo’s utility and creating multiple pathways to victory. The combo’s power lies in its straightforward execution and the efficient mana costs of its components, making it accessible for players of various skill levels and budgets. By resurfacing classic combo archetypes through new card designs, Secrets of Strixhaven appeals to both longtime players nostalgic for previous combo strategies and newer players discovering their potential.
