Valve releases Steam Controller CAD files under Creative Commons license

Valve has released the complete CAD files for its new Steam Controller and accompanying charging puck under a Creative Commons license, enabling the modding community to design custom accessories and modifications for the hardware.

The release includes external shell design files in multiple formats (.STP, .STL) along with detailed engineering diagrams showing critical areas that must remain uncovered to maintain signal strength and ensure proper device functionality. This open-source approach allows modders and enthusiasts to create skins, charging stands, grip extenders, smartphone mounts, and other custom additions to personalize their controllers.

The new Steam Controller launched on May 4, 2026, and became an instant success, selling out within approximately 30 minutes and causing Steam’s servers to experience heavy traffic from the surge in demand. The rapid sell-out underscores strong community interest in Valve’s redesigned gamepad.

This CAD release continues Valve’s established practice of supporting hardware modding communities. The company previously released CAD files for the Steam Deck handheld console, the Valve Index VR headset, and the original Steam Controller that debuted a decade ago. By providing these design files under Creative Commons licensing, Valve enables creators to expand the functionality and customization options available to users without requiring proprietary tools or permissions.
