Civilization 7’s huge ‘Test of Time’ update arrives this month, and it’s full of deep changes to the divisive 4X game
Civilization 7 is receiving its largest post-launch update, “Test of Time,” arriving May 19th, which fundamentally addresses one of the game’s most controversial design decisions since its early 2025 launch. The update will allow players to maintain a single civilization throughout an entire game, bypassing the Age system that required players to switch to different civilizations between historical epochs.
The Age system emerged as a major point of contention with the community, and Take-Two’s leadership has acknowledged the misstep, with the company’s boss stating “we got it wrong” regarding the mechanic. The update represents the culmination of over a year of player feedback and iteration, with developer Firaxis synthesizing community input into what they describe as the game’s “biggest and most fundamentally game-changing” revision.
Since its launch, Civilization 7 has faced criticism beyond the Age system, including complaints about the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features from previous entries. The game currently has a smaller Steam player base than both Civilization VI and the 15-year-old Civilization V, though Take-Two noted the title has performed well and possesses long-term potential. The free “Test of Time” update aims to address these concerns and rebuild community confidence in the strategy game.
