Griffin Gaming Partners launches $100M fund to support indie developers

Venture capital firm Griffin Gaming Partners has announced the launch of a new $100 million fund dedicated to financing independent game developers. The fund, named the Special Opportunities Fund, will provide capital to studios developing “world-class indie games” in exchange for a share of each title’s revenue, rather than taking equity stakes.

This revenue-based model represents a shift in how game funding traditionally works, with Griffin Gaming Partners positioning the fund as offering “a better way of getting capital into the hands of indie studios.” The fund will be overseen by Tim Bender, CEO of Hooded Horse.

The initiative responds to the demonstrated success of indie developers in recent years, who have achieved significant commercial hits while working with comparatively modest budgets compared to larger studio productions. According to the firm’s statement, this track record has highlighted both the need for and the opportunity to develop fairer funding solutions tailored to small development studios. By focusing on revenue-sharing rather than equity investments, the fund aims to allow indie developers to retain greater creative control and ownership of their projects while still accessing substantial capital for development and marketing.
