Watch Polygon’s new Minecraft documentary about the kids rebuilding New York
Polygon has released a documentary following Battle of the Boroughs, New York City’s public school Minecraft tournament where student teams compete to create builds addressing real urban challenges. Rather than traditional competitive gaming, the competition directs students to conceptualize solutions to pressing city problems through Minecraft Education, including equitable food access, renewable energy infrastructure, and public transit connectivity. One featured challenge asks teams to reimagine the city with improved connections, such as extending the Q train to Randall’s Island.
The documentary, titled “Battle of the Boroughs: The Kids Who Build New York City in Minecraft,” chronicles the 2025 competition from initial submissions through completion. The series demonstrates how games can serve educational and civic engagement purposes, combining technical creativity with real-world problem-solving.
The project highlights how Minecraft Education facilitates hands-on learning about urban planning, social equity, and infrastructure design, reflecting a broader trend of using games as teaching tools.
