Everything you need to know about Stranger Than Heaven, the half-century-spanning Yakuza series prequel
RGG Studio has announced Stranger Than Heaven, an expansive crime drama prequel to the Yakuza series set in the first half of the 1900s. The game serves as the origin story of the Tojo Clan and spans the century’s early decades, following protagonists Makoto and Yu as they rise through the ranks as showmen and gangsters in mid-century Japan. The title precedes even Yakuza 0 chronologically, establishing itself as the true beginning of the franchise’s narrative.
The game features an impressive international cast of voice actors and musicians. Snoop Dogg, Dean Fujioka, and Japanese pop sensation Ado headline the ensemble cast, with Ado making her voice acting debut in the game as character Keiko Shirai. The theme song, debuted during the game’s reveal, brings together Snoop Dogg, Ado, Satoshi Fujihara, and singer Tori Kelly for a surprising musical collaboration.
A notable innovation in Stranger Than Heaven is its approach to voice acting. Rather than offering separate English and Japanese audio tracks, the game features a groundbreaking bilingual system where characters switch languages depending on who they’re speaking with. This design choice was influenced by the game’s protagonist, Makoto Daito, who grew up in the United States before returning to Japan—a backstory reflected in the casting of Japanese-Spanish actor Yu Shirota in the role. RGG Studio notes this marks the first time in the studio’s history that such a dynamic multilingual voice acting approach has been implemented.
