Star Fox 64 Remake For Switch 2 Announced, Arrives Next Month

Nintendo has announced Star Fox, a full remake of Star Fox 64 for Nintendo Switch 2, launching June 25, 2026 at $50 USD (£42 GBP). The 14.8GB game represents a “cinematic take” on the 1997 N64 original with completely revamped graphics, new animated cutscenes, redesigned characters with a more realistic art style, fully voiced dialogue, and a sweeping orchestral soundtrack. Stage layouts remain faithful to the original rail-shooter gameplay.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. While some celebrate Star Fox’s return after over a decade away from new entries, many fans express frustration that this marks the third Star Fox 64 remake—following 2011’s Star Fox 64 3D for Nintendo 3DS. Given the Star Fox franchise contains only 10 games total, half now derive from the same N64 entry. The character redesigns have proven particularly divisive, with the more detailed, realistic animal models dividing opinion between those who praise the visual overhaul and those who find the aesthetic jarring compared to previous stylized designs.

Despite mixed reception, the reveal has broader significance for Nintendo’s approach to dormant franchises. Star Fox’s comeback represents a calculated strategy to establish the character as a more consistent presence in Nintendo’s portfolio, particularly following Fox McCloud’s recent appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The announcement has fueled speculation about similar remakes of other N64 classics, notably The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The game will feature new multiplayer battle modes alongside its orchestral soundtrack, which Nintendo has begun promoting through early releases on its mobile music app.
