Steam Controller Reservations Open May 8th As Valve Implements Anti-Scalping Measures
The new Steam Controller, priced at $99, launched on May 4th, 2026, and faced overwhelming demand, selling out within approximately 30 minutes. Many prospective buyers encountered technical difficulties during checkout, including error messages and payment processing issues. The scarcity prompted scalpers to list controllers on eBay for prices ranging from double to quadruple the original price.
In response, Valve announced a reservation queue system beginning May 8th at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET / 6 PM BST). The system mirrors the approach used during the Steam Deck launch, where users register interest, receive an email when their position arrives, and have 72 hours to complete their purchase or forfeit their spot.
To combat scalping and ensure fair access, Valve implemented several anti-scalping measures: each customer can purchase only one Steam Controller, and purchasers must have an account in good standing on Steam with a prior game purchase dating before April. Valve indicated it will continue restocking the controller as additional inventory arrives from manufacturers, signaling that more purchasing opportunities will be available beyond the initial May 8th reservation opening.
