‘Not-for-profit’ biz models can make for better showcases, say Triple-i Initiative organizers
The Triple-i Initiative, an annual game marketing showcase run by indie developer Evil Empire, operates on a not-for-profit model focused on covering operational costs rather than generating profits. The event brings together independent game developers, with approximately 40 developers paying around €14,700 each to participate after selection. According to Evil Empire COO Benjamin Laulan, this cost-covering approach creates a more effective marketing platform and delivers better event quality.
By prioritizing operational sustainability over profit margins, the Triple-i Initiative positions itself alongside other prominent gaming showcases and streams such as Summer Game Fest and region-specific events like the Latin American Games Showcase. This business model reflects a growing approach in the gaming industry where marketing events can serve developers more effectively when structured as break-even operations rather than profit-generating ventures. The participant fees directly fund the showcase’s infrastructure and operations, aligning event organizers’ interests with participating developers’ success.
